Rauma is an idyllic small town on Finland’s west coast. Founded in 1442, Rauma is one of Finland’s oldest cities, with a population of just over 37,000 today.
A distinctive feature of Rauma is the offshore archipelago with its many skerries, as well as the Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse.
Sights in Rauma
The old town is made entirely of wood and was also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. This makes the Old Town also the most beautiful and largest sight in the city.
But the cozy small town is also known for you Raumaer lace. These bobbin laces are in great demand today and the bobbin lace craft is still practiced by a large number of the inhabitants.
Very interesting is also the maritime museum. In the museum there is a permanent exhibition as well as changing exhibitions and a cafeteria. There is also a navigation simulator here, incidentally the only one in the world that is open to museum visitors.
For those interested in the old town, the Tammela House is the place to be. Here you can see how an old log house is restored. Furthermore, changing exhibitions about the old town also take place here.
Exploring the surroundings of Rauma
For holidaymakers without their own vehicle, a hire car is of unbeatable advantage. With it, all the sights in and around Rauma can be reached quickly and comfortably, even if only little time is available.
For example, the nearest World Heritage Site is just around the corner. Just outside the city, near Lappi, is Sammallahdenmäki. This is a burial mound with nearly three dozen graves from the Scandinavian Bronze Age.
